CREATIVE PIECE - 1 page minimum
Create a comic (it can be simple stick figures) as well as write a short story that goes with your comic based off one of the following alternatives. Your writing should be the main part of your short story but incorporate the comic where you think it best fits – just as you see in the book. *Remember that a picture is worth a thousand words – hopefully your comic may reveal more about the character(s) you choose than if there was just your short story with no picture.
Episode
1. Choose an existing episode and expand on it
Example: Expand on Penelope's hopes and dreams. Write a short story from her perspective talking about what she wants to do in life and how she feels about herself/family/Junior that helps her make her decisions. A possible comic could be a picture of her in the future 10-20 years from now – what is her ideal future?
2. Write a new episode that could possibly fit into the story
Example: Write the story of Gordy being the 'outcast' of Reardan. Consider the parallels between Junior and Gordy – they are both smart, they are both outcasts, etc. A possible picture may be a picture of Gordy first seeing Junior and his reaction to him. What is he thinking that you don't see in the dialogue?
Character
1. Take an existing character and explain their actions in a scene
Example: Write a story about Roger and how he feels about being punched by Junior. How does this make him feel (really feel on the inside) and not just what we see on his "cool" exterior. Did another character (say Eugene) discreetly talk with Roger and make him afraid of Indians? A possible picture may be of the "expected" way Roger handles the bullying situation with Junior and Eugene vs. what he really feels on the inside (scared).
2. Create a new character and add their thoughts about an existing scene or write another scene through their point of view (that could be added to the book)
Example: Introduce a character that is reading Mary's romance novel that she was working on (given that maybe her manuscript was in her car and survived the fire) many years later. Somehow it got published when the draft was sent to Junior's family and they fulfilled Mary's dreams of being a published author. As the story was a "life story" – how does this person react to Mary's story? A possible comic may be a cover art of Mary's story. Give it a title and a meaningful picture.
ANALYSIS Write a paragraph explaining how you closely connected comics and pictures to your short story. What did you end up drawing and why? Where did you end up putting your picture and how did your picture add something 'extra' to your short story? What was your comic able to tell that your dialogue and story could not? Did you like the addition of a comic to your writing, why or why not?
