CREATIVE PIECE - 1 page minimum By looking at Sherman Alexie's writing style throughout the novel, create a short creative piece in the likeliness of the author's writing style using one of the following alternatives.
Episode 1. Choose an existing episode and expand on it
Example: Continue the story of Penelope and Junior's trip to their High School dance (maybe even into the after party later). Using Sherman Alexie's writing style, continue expanding on this story.
2. Write a new episode that could possibly fit into the story
Example: Talk about the first time Junior and Rowdy meet and how they became friends. Using what you know about the two boys' personalities and how each of them talk to each other make up their meeting!
Character 1. Take an existing character and explain their actions in a scene
Example: Write a story about why Mary runs away to Montanna. You see part of her voice in her letters to Junior – continue writing through her voice to explain her actions in the novel.
2. Create a new character and add their thoughts about an existing scene or write another scene through their point of view (that could be added to the book)
Example: Create another white kid going to Reardan who is friends with Junior. Using what you know about how Junior was being treated at Reardan, use this new boy/girl to explain his/her thoughts on Juniors actions and maybe even how his school life has changed now that he is here. Be sure to incorporate Sherman Alexie's writing style in your writing.
ANALYSIS Write a paragraph explaining how you used Sherman Alexie's writing style to help you write your short story. Would your story be able to slip easily into the book? Where would you, as the author, put it in the story? Also choose one of your own quotes (from your creative piece) to talk about. Explain how this quote is similar to Sherman Alexie's writing style.
